Separation and national identity : a narrative account of Chilean exiles living in Saskatchewan

    Get PDF
The study is a narrative account of Chilean men who came to Canada after the September 11th, 1973 overthrow of government. In-depth interviews are used to reflect the life stories of 12 political exiles living in Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan. This study expands the theme of belonging by analyzing how exiles negotiate identity to their country 25 years after their imposed departure. The accounts reveal how different groups of exiles draw on a view of their past as to reinforce links to the homeland. The question of identity is examined through the changing nature of exile political discourse and how that discourse provides meaning and shape to the host and home country. The study therefore asks how Chilean men in Canada remember their country, make sense of their political experiences, and give meaning to the question of belonging in the light of changing circumstances in their lives

THE WATER-ENERGY-LAND NEXUS OF BIOENERGY PRODUCTION IN BRAZIL

Biofuels play a critical role in the Paris Agreement to help achieve climate change mitigation targets. However, a significant increase in production of biofuels might potentially be realized at the expense of overusing natural resources, particularly land and water. Understanding the tradeoffs between the development of biofuels and its impacts on land and water is a critical issue for sustainable development. This energy-water-land nexus might be particularly important for Brazil, given its position as top exporter and second top producer of bioenergy. Furthermore, Brazil itself has set up its own Intended Nationally Determined Contribution agenda with a significant growth of biofuel production by 2030. The aim of this research is to quantitatively characterize the nexus of biofuels production with the overall appropriation of land and water resources at the subnational level in Brazil by answering the following questions: (i) How will the implementation of international climate mitigation commitments adopted by Brazil impact water and land use and therefore water and land stress in Brazil?; (ii) what will be the geographical distribution of such impacts at subnational level? ; (iii) will increase competition among economic sectors aggravate such impacts?; and (iv) how will other socio-economic and physical drivers of change affect those impacts combined with INDC related policies implementation?. To answer these questions, I developed a set of socio-economic, policy and climate scenarios through an environmentally extended input-output approach that represents socio-economic activities in the 27 Brazilian states, allowing comparison of the resulting water and land demands among main competitive users under different scenarios. I also introduced the use of water scarcity and land stress as environmental impact indicators. My study confirms that to properly understand the impacts of biofuel production in Brazil on land and water and its “nexus”, the consideration of resource scarcity and its spatial variability are key to ensure sustainable planning of biofuel production. Moreover, I found that the mitigation policies committed by Brazil and its role as top global provider of biofuel will take a significant toll in both water and land consumption in the country, leading to increasing competition among food production, energy generation and human consumption, especially in the most vulnerable and already environmentally stressed states

Finite element modelling (including material grain refinement prediction) when turning advanced aerospace alloys

    Get PDF
The overall aim of the project/research was to develop finite element modelling/process simulation capability to predict workpiece surface integrity following machining of advanced aerospace alloys. The modelling work employed the general-purpose commercial finite element (FE) software ABAQUS, due to its robust solver for handling complex, dynamic non-linear problems as well as the facility to define custom algorithms/subroutines. Both 2D and 3D fully coupled thermo-mechanical FE models were formulated to simulate the orthogonal turning of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and Inconel 718 nickel based superalloy. The performance of various material models and associated damage criteria were assessed, with high strain rate (up to ~ 6000 s^-1^1) / temperature (up to ~ 850°C) flow stress data for Inconel 718 obtained from compression tests using SHPB and Gleeble systems. In addition to evaluating the influence of operating conditions on response measures such as cutting forces, temperatures and chip morphology, the FE models were extended to enable prediction of grain size distribution due to dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) of workpiece microstructure following machining. This was accomplished by developing a VUMAT user customised subroutine that included material constitutive modelling, damage initiation/propagation as well as a novel material model to predict workpiece grain refinement due to DRX

IDEALIST control and service management solutions for dynamic and adaptive flexi-grid DWDM networks

    Get PDF
Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSON) were designed with the premise that all channels in a network have the same spectrum needs, based on the ITU-T DWDM grid. However, this rigid grid-based approach is not adapted to the spectrum requirements of the signals that are best candidates for long-reach transmission and high-speed data rates of 400Gbps and beyond. An innovative approach is to evolve the fixed DWDM grid to a flexible grid, in which the optical spectrum is partitioned into fixed-sized spectrum slices. This allows facilitating the required amount of optical bandwidth and spectrum for an elastic optical connection to be dynamically and adaptively allocated by assigning the necessary number of slices of spectrum. The ICT IDEALIST project will provide the architectural design, protocol specification, implementation, evaluation and standardization of a control plane and a network and service management system. This architecture and tools are necessary to introduce dynamicity, elasticity and adaptation in flexi-grid DWDM networks. This paper provides an overview of the objectives, framework, functional requirements and use cases of the elastic control plane and the adaptive network and service management system targeted in the ICT IDEALIST project

Asymmetric multilevel topology for photovoltaic energy injection to microgrids

    Get PDF
The massive penetration of renewable energy sources in the utility grid has emerged as the solution to obtain clean energy in modern electric systems, which are gradually replacing their generators that produce CO2 emissions to achieve a sustainable growing. Power electronics is quite relevant in the deep penetration of renewable energy, because the use of such equipment is mandatory to integrate these new resources with the existing facilities. In order to reach higher power ranges, multilevel topologies are the state-of-the-art solution, due to the limited rating of the actual semiconductor devices. Furthermore, latest trends show that asymmetric multilevel configurations are an attractive technology to connect directly the power converters to the grid. This paper analyze the photovoltaic energy injection to microgrids using a hybrid approach that mixes the existing topologies: string, multistring and central inverter to implement an asymmetric structure that generate highly sinusoidal resulting waveforms. This document includes a simple analysis of the proposed configuration and highlights the advantages of using an asymmetric converter, supported with stationary and dynamic simulated results
